From 'Right To Education' To 'Right To Quality Education'

Despite having a pool of talent Indian education system remains in a dire state. Maybe our aspiring scientists are too focused on memorizing the scientific formulas which they find difficult to apply to the world around them. The problem lies with the core of our system. The Indian education system needs an overhaul.

We need a result-oriented approach to take full advantage of our student’s inherent potential. Instead of rewarding memory, our education system needs to focus on practical problem-solving skills. This is what we call ‘putting knowledge into better use.’

We, at The Abchlor Foundation, believe that by focusing on critical thinking and analytical skills our country will be able to unleash the true potential of our future leaders. Instead of ‘right to education,’ we must harp on ‘right to quality education.’It is with this belief The Abchlor Foundation was set up. We want to encourage and stimulate analytical thinking among students. Our mission can be summed up as instead of asking ‘what is the colour of apple?’ the students must be encouraged to ask ‘how an apple is different from other fruits?”

As a society, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that the student pool gets access to quality education. We don’t want students to be judged for lack of knowledge, rather we want students to demonstrate a hunger for knowledge even if it means failing to be on the merit list.

At The Abchlor Foundation, we strive to create leaders instead of followers. This can only happen if the community of teachers and parents join hands with us. We want to dump the casual approach towards education and promote an environment for students that sharpen their critical and analytical skills.

Together, we need to step out of our comfort zone. In the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) assessment of 74 countries in 2009, India was ranked 72nd and 73rd on different parameters. A vast majority of the talent drops out of school because of unfavourable living conditions like poverty and lack of job security.

The Abchlor Foundation’s mission is to bring a paradigm shift in the way education is perceived in our country. Our goal is to nurture and support those who do not privilege to access quality education. We strive to make education an enjoyable learning experience.

The Abchlor Foundation seeks your support. Together, we can make effort to harness the hidden potential of our students.

Indian Education: Are We Equipped For Future Challenges

The national statistics on education is quite distressing. Even before the pandemic, the drop-out rates in the Indian education sector was very high. This is in contrast to high budgetary allocation to the education sector i.e from INR 3.6 lakh crore to INR 4.6 lakh crore over a 10-year period (2006-2016).

The pandemic brought offline activities to a grinding halt. The shift to online education is likely to deteriorate these numbers further. The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) report 2020 revealed that 5.3 per cent of rural children aged 6-10 years have not enrolled in school this year, compared to 1.8 per cent in 2018.

The World Bank’s Human Capital Index, 2018 ranks India at 115 out of 157 nations. There is an urgent need to improve the quality of education in the country. The biggest eye-opener is that the measurement of learning outcome - as measured by grade 3 and 5 reading- and mathematics abilities – have deteriorated for most states for over a decade until 2014.

The worrisome situation can be attributed to the lackadaisical attitude of the states towards education. In the states like Bihar, though the real enrolment has gone up, the state’s real expenditure has declined. This has affected the quality of education which has impacted learning outcomes.

Astonishingly, nearly a third of schools in India lack proper electricity and access to computers. This has been detrimental in a shift to online education. In fact, in some of the states like Jharkhand, less than 15% of schools have proper electricity and access to computers.

It is high time, we come together and make it a mission to improve the access to quality education. The Abchlor Foundation works with a vision that all children will be equipped with the education, skills and character they need to lead empowered lives.

We strongly believe that by taking a holistic approach for providing education to the underprivileged it is possible to achieve excellence in their core skills, but this is possible only if parents, teachers and society integrate and form a strong community.

If you would like to contribute or volunteer, kindly get in touch with us.

Together we can and we will.

Mission Education: The Pandemic Will Not Stop Us

The pandemic has put brakes on almost everything. Though schools and colleges embraced digital learning, there is still a wide social gap when it comes to accessing digital learning.

At The Abchlor Foundation, we are committed to continuing the mission of education unhalted. We firmly believe that efforts at the grassroots level should continue to ensure that the education needs of even the most underprivileged are met. We want to keep the dream of education alive even amongst the children having the most negligible opportunities. Such children have to fight obstacles at every step of their life.

We can continue to keep the ray of hope alive by working together. The collaborative approach can help us realise the dream of educating every single child. Indians are well-known give their best, regardless of challenges.

Indian students have proved to the world that they are capable of performing efficiently even during tough times.

We understand that not everybody has access to new learning methods. The Abchlor Foundation was set up with the sole purpose of counselling and guiding the children towards achieving their goals.

Our immediate goal is to provide textbooks, notebooks and other learning materials like worksheets that can help children revive their interest in studies.

The Collaborative Vision -

We firmly believe that by collaborating we can help children realise their goals. You could be a teacher or a parent who want to contribute either by providing skills or donating. Collaboration is the need of the hour. The dreams of children won’t survive without your help.

Neither our vision is about us nor it is about you. It is about harnessing the potential of a country and put it on a global map. Our aim is not just to educate deserving children with negligible opportunities but also to nurture their mental health. We want to equip them with the skills that will help them to be a part of mainstream society.

Hope is our strength. It powers our dream of holding hands of 'left-behind children ensuring that their future is not claimed by the poverty cycle.

At a time when dreams are crumbling due to the pandemic, we firmly believe that the struggles of yesterday hold the ray of hope for tomorrow. We are not going to limit ourselves as a mentor, we are committed to being the active partner in every child’s education journey.

If you would like to donate, you can do so via our global giving page and join us in our mission to provide education for all.

Together, we can and we will.

Why Connections Are Important To Build Better Society?

At The Abchlor Foundation, we believe that personal connections and relationships can be a saving grace when a person feels isolated. This is what defines us, a connection.

We strive to become the connecting link between a student and learning systems. In the past year and a half, the education world had to transition to a virtual platform. Everything, from mentoring, coaching and workshops, became virtual. This transition was very challenging. This also meant a mentally taxing situation for those who did not have access to new learning systems.

In order to bridge the gap, we need the support of our volunteer mentors. While everybody focuses on grades, behaviour, attendance and future plans, our volunteer mentors are our boots on the ground. Without them, we would not be able to build a connection and bridge the gap. With the help of our volunteers, we can identify and help the students that are struggling.

The Abchlor Foundation was set up to break the cycle of poverty through education. India’s demographic is such that despite having low income, students show the potential to go to and excel in the world. It gives us the satisfaction to know that we are contributing something that can make a difference.

We need mentors who can not only donate but lend their time, talents and experiences to provide real-world advice and connections for students. We firmly believe that education can free people from the traps of the poverty cycle. A single institution or government is not enough to bring the transformation. It is a collective effort that requires dedication and passion to help others.

If you are reading this, you are probably thinking, “There is no way I am qualified to volunteer.” But each one has something to offer maybe it’s a donation or some life experience that can help students. Remember, the learning aids help students understand the subject matter, but a connection is more important for the success of the student. It gives them confidence. This is what makes The Abchlor Foundation different from others.

Let us all come together and ensure that the underprivileged get equal opportunity to be a part of mainstream society.
